SUMMARY:Relaxed Opening Hours: Seurat and the Sea @ The Courtauld\, London
DESCRIPTION:13 February – 17 May 2026\nDenise Coates Exhibition Galleries\, Floor 3 \n★★★★★ “Tremendous” – The Guardian\n“The magic of Seurat’s seascapes” – The Times\n“Unmissable” – Time Out \nThe Courtauld presents the first ever exhibition dedicated to the seascapes of the French artist Georges Seurat (1859–1891). This major\, focused display is the first devoted to Seurat in the UK in almost 30 years. It charts the evolution of his radical and distinctive style through the recurring motif of the sea. \nThe Courtauld holds the largest collection of works by Seurat in the UK. The artist is best known as the creator of the Neo-Impressionist technique\, in which shapes and light are rendered by juxtaposing small dots of pure colour. Due to his early death at the age of 31\, Seurat has a very small pool of works and exhibitions devoted to him are rare. \nThe Griffin Catalyst Exhibition: Seurat and the Sea brings together 26 paintings\, oil sketches and drawings made by Seurat during the five summers he spent on the northern coast of France\, between 1885 and 1890. Working in port towns along the English Channel\, including Honfleur\, Port-en-Bessin and Gravelines\, Seurat captured their seascapes\, regattas and port activity in his distinctive Neo-Impressionist technique. He sought\, in his words\, ‘to wash his eyes of the days spent in the studio [in Paris] and to translate in the most faithful manner the bright clarity\, in all its nuances’. \nThese works are an important counterpoint to his Parisian works\, which are better known and more widely studied. This exhibition will therefore provide a unique opportunity to reassess an important but often overlooked aspect of Seurat’s career. \nDue to unprecedented demand\, the Courtauld has extended its opening hours on every Friday evening until 8pm throughout the run\, to ensure visitors do not miss out. \nTickets for 13 April – 17 May and late openings are on sale to Courtauld Members from Friday 13 February\, 10:00\, and to the public on Monday 16 February\, 10:00. Sign up to our newsletter to hear about further ticket announcements. \n\n\n\nBook now\n\nBecome a Member today for exclusive Members’ events\, priority booking and more. \n\n\n13 Feb – 17 May 2026 \n\n\n10:00 – 18:00 (last entry 17:15) \n\nCourtauld Gallery Somerset House The Denise Coates Exhibition Galleries\n\nTickets for 13 April – 17 May and late openings are now on sale to Courtauld Members\nCourtauld Members go free. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRELAXED OPENING HOURS\n\nWednesday 8 April and Tuesday 5 May 2026 at 10am or 10.15am. \nJoin us for relaxed openings of The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition: Seurat and the Sea.\nOur relaxed openings provide a quieter moment to enjoy the exhibition\, with additional support and facilities from our friendly team. \nThese events are suitable for anyone who prefers to visit the gallery when it is less crowded\, including disabled visitors\, neurodivergent visitors or those with additional sensory needs\, and their families and carers. \nYou can expect:\n– Fewer people in the exhibition\n– Extra staff on hand to answer any questions\n– Multisensory handling resources and ear defenders available\n– Comfortable cushions and mats to sit and enjoy the exhibition \n– Book now 8 April\n– Book now 5 May \nPlease note this is a relaxed event\, which means you are welcome to move around and make noise at any time.
