I was touched by such a supportive environment and welcoming faces. Thank you!” \nJoin us for this free\, bookable session which will take place on a Monday when the museum is closed to the public. Siblings\, families\, carers and friends are all welcome. All activities are optional and you can visit at any point within the event times. \nThe session will offer: \n\nsensory backpacks and ear defenders\nbreak out spaces\nthemed facilitated hands-on activity\nthemed gallery trail \n\nPlease visit our Museums\, My Way page to find out more about the Museums Partnership Reading programme at The MERL\, Reading Museum and other partner venues\, and our Access page for downloadable resources (sensory map\, and social story) to help you prepare for your visit. \nParking\nPlease note that the museum’s car park can fill up quickly at busy times. If The MERL car park is full\, you can use a special parking permit\, valid throughout half term\, to park in the University car parks on Acacia Road adjacent to the museum\, or White Gates car park found at the second left off Crown Place\, a short walk from the museum. (Please note the permit is not valid in the private car park on Crown Place) \nView the car park locations\, driving and walking routes.\nYou can collect a permit from reception at the museum or download the permit here and print at home (link coming soon). \nIf you do not display a permit\, you may be issued with a penalty. Explore the museum under relaxed conditions or come to the timed art workshops.\nFebruary’s theme is Magical Manga. In the workshop you will learn how to draw a manga version of yourself. You will then be shown how to add magical accessories and effects to your drawing. There is a family trail to accompany the exhibition\, which you are welcome to take part in. There is background noise in this exhibition\, which will be played at a lower volume during your visit.\nThe IWM North building is designed to encourage visitors to consider the confusion experienced during conflict. As a result\, the floor of the Main Exhibition Space has a gentle slope and visitors with mobility impairments\, mobility aids\, sensory processing differences\, or buggies may wish to take extra care in this area.\nThere will be Big Picture Shows played in the Main Exhibition Space at 4pm and 5pm. During the shows\, the Main Exhibition Space will be dark\, and the film will be projected around the walls. The shows will play at a lower volume than usual and contain no sudden loud sound effects.\nAt 4pm the show is called The Roads We Walked: The Fifth Pan-African Congress. The show celebrates the 80th Anniversary of the Fifth Pan-African Congress\, which took place in Manchester in 1945. At 5pm the show is called Animals and War which explores the stories of brave animal heroes from the First World War to the present day. Anyone not wishing to watch is welcome to leave the Main Exhibition Space and return later\, should they wish to continue exploring. Ear defenders will be available and staff and volunteers will be on hand to help.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilities\n\n\n\nAccessible toilets and baby change facilities are available on the ground floor and are signposted.\nThere are a small number of ear defenders and sensory backpacks containing items that may help your visit. Details of where these areas are located can be found in the visual walkthrough. There will be signage at the event.\nThe exhibitions are designed to encourage visitors to consider the experiences of people during conflict. In our First World War Galleries\, there is a short\, optional section that takes visitors through a replica trench. The floor in this area is textured\, with low lighting and sound effects.
