SUMMARY:Relaxed event - Samurai @ British Museum\, London
DESCRIPTION:This event welcomes people with disabilities\, neurodivergent individuals and anyone with sensory needs seeking a calmer environment in which to view the Samurai exhibition.\nDiscover the reality behind a millennium of myth at this sweeping exhibition on the legendary Japanese warriors. The samurai is an iconic figure\, evoking images of formidable fighters possessing ideals of courage\, honour and self-sacrifice. Yet much of what we think we know about samurai is invented tradition. \nOur concept of samurai today has its origins in medieval reality. A distinct warrior class – known in Japan as bushi – emerged and gained political dominance from the 1100s. But during a prolonged period of peace\, beginning in 1615\, the samurai moved away from the battlefield to become an elite social class that also included women. Samurai men formed the government\, serving as ministers and bureaucrats. Many became leaders in scholarship and the arts\, as patrons\, poets and painters\, in a world where intellectual pursuits were just as important as swordsmanship. \nThis event is part of the public programme supporting the exhibition Samurai (open until 4 May 2026). \nBooking information\n\nBook now(Opens in new window) to reserve your place.\nPlease meet at the Montague Place entrance at 6pm. View the Museum map(Opens in new window) for more information.\nAssistance dogs are very welcome in the Museum.\nIf you have any access requirements or need assistance booking this event please email access@britishmuseum.org or phone +44 (0)20 7323 8971.

SUMMARY:Relaxed event - Hawaiʻi: a kingdom crossing oceans @ British Museum\, London
DESCRIPTION:This event welcomes people with disabilities\, neurodivergent individuals and anyone with sensory needs seeking a calmer environment in which to view Hawaiʻi: a kingdom crossing oceans.\nThe exhibition is a dazzling celebration of the artistry and history of Hawaiʻi. It brings together remarkable objects – from feathered cloaks worn by chiefs and finely carved deities\, to powerful shark-toothed weapons and bold contemporary works by Kānaka ʻŌiwi (Native Hawaiian) artists. \nIn 1824\, the young King Liholiho and Queen Kamāmalu travelled across vast oceans on a journey that would mark a turning point in the history of their kingdom\, Hawaiʻi. The exhibition commemorates over 200 years since this ill-fated royal visit and sheds light on Hawaiʻi’s history and culture through an exploration of the complex and enduring relationship between the Hawaiian and British nations. \nThis event is part of the public programme supporting the exhibition Hawaiʻi: a kingdom crossing oceans (open until 25 May 2026). \nBooking information\n\nBook now(Opens in new window) to reserve your place.\nPlease meet at the Montague Place entrance at 6pm. SUMMARY:Relaxed Opening Hours: Seurat and the Sea @ The Courtauld\, London
DESCRIPTION:13 February – 17 May 2026\nDenise Coates Exhibition Galleries\, Floor 3 \n★★★★★ “Tremendous” – The Guardian\n“The magic of Seurat’s seascapes” – The Times\n“Unmissable” – Time Out \nThe Courtauld presents the first ever exhibition dedicated to the seascapes of the French artist Georges Seurat (1859–1891). This major\, focused display is the first devoted to Seurat in the UK in almost 30 years. It charts the evolution of his radical and distinctive style through the recurring motif of the sea. \nThe Courtauld holds the largest collection of works by Seurat in the UK. The artist is best known as the creator of the Neo-Impressionist technique\, in which shapes and light are rendered by juxtaposing small dots of pure colour. Due to his early death at the age of 31\, Seurat has a very small pool of works and exhibitions devoted to him are rare. \nThe Griffin Catalyst Exhibition: Seurat and the Sea brings together 26 paintings\, oil sketches and drawings made by Seurat during the five summers he spent on the northern coast of France\, between 1885 and 1890. Working in port towns along the English Channel\, including Honfleur\, Port-en-Bessin and Gravelines\, Seurat captured their seascapes\, regattas and port activity in his distinctive Neo-Impressionist technique. He sought\, in his words\, ‘to wash his eyes of the days spent in the studio [in Paris] and to translate in the most faithful manner the bright clarity\, in all its nuances’. \nThese works are an important counterpoint to his Parisian works\, which are better known and more widely studied. This exhibition will therefore provide a unique opportunity to reassess an important but often overlooked aspect of Seurat’s career. \nDue to unprecedented demand\, the Courtauld has extended its opening hours on every Friday evening until 8pm throughout the run\, to ensure visitors do not miss out. \nTickets for 13 April – 17 May and late openings are on sale to Courtauld Members from Friday 13 February\, 10:00\, and to the public on Monday 16 February\, 10:00. Sign up to our newsletter to hear about further ticket announcements. \n\n\n\nBook now\n\nBecome a Member today for exclusive Members’ events\, priority booking and more. \n\n\n13 Feb – 17 May 2026 \n\n\n10:00 – 18:00 (last entry 17:15) \n\nCourtauld Gallery Somerset House The Denise Coates Exhibition Galleries\n\nTickets for 13 April – 17 May and late openings are now on sale to Courtauld Members\nCourtauld Members go free. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRELAXED OPENING HOURS\n\nWednesday 8 April and Tuesday 5 May 2026 at 10am or 10.15am. \nJoin us for relaxed openings of The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition: Seurat and the Sea.\nOur relaxed openings provide a quieter moment to enjoy the exhibition\, with additional support and facilities from our friendly team. \nThese events are suitable for anyone who prefers to visit the gallery when it is less crowded\, including disabled visitors\, neurodivergent visitors or those with additional sensory needs\, and their families and carers. \nYou can expect:\n– Fewer people in the exhibition\n– Extra staff on hand to answer any questions\n– Multisensory handling resources and ear defenders available\n– Comfortable cushions and mats to sit and enjoy the exhibition \n– Book now 8 April\n– Book now 5 May \nPlease note this is a relaxed event\, which means you are welcome to move around and make noise at any time.

Zeeshan Choudhury in conversation with artist and activist Nicola Field and Grrrl Zine Fair founder and artist Lu Williams to explore the role of art in shaping\, revealing and validating neurodivergent experiences. \nArt can express sensory and emotional experiences that clinical language often cannot\, and for many neurodivergent people\, creative practice can surface sidelined truths and open space for new kinds of understanding. \nThis conversation may touch on topics of ableism\, systemic bias and trauma. \nThere will be an opportunity for audience participation. You can choose to listen\, ask questions or share your thoughts – whatever feels right for you. \nIf you want a break from the activities\, you can head to our Chill-Out Room to lie down or relax. There will be low lighting\, comfortable seating\, cushions\, mats\, ear defenders\, earplugs and sensory toys. \nOnce the event ends\, you’re welcome to stay and chat with the team about how we choose what goes into our collection and how neurodivergent experiences appear within it.
