SUMMARY:Quiet Hour Fridays: Helios @ Painted Hall\, Greenwich
DESCRIPTION:ACCESS \nQuiet Hour Fridays | Helios in the Painted Hall\n\n\n\nWHAT’S ON \nEvery Friday | 10am–11.15am\nTickets: £16.50\, kids go free \nPainted Hall\, Old Royal Naval College\, King William Walk\, Greenwich\, London\, SE10 9NN \n\n\nThis session is intended for those that want to appreciate the space in a more relaxed environment with a reduced number of visitors. This session is primarily for\, but not limited to\, neurodiverse adults and children\, and any other visitors with sensory needs who may prefer a more relaxed experience \n \nABOUT HELIOS\nNamed after the ancient Greek and Roman sun god\, symbolic of time and life\, Helios honours the Sun’s profound impact on human history and culture. Every centimetre of the seven metre internally lit artwork represents 2000km of the Sun’s fiery expanse. This is a rare opportunity to closely examine the star’s extraordinary surface in astonishing detail. \nAt a scale of 1:200 million\, every centimetre of the seven metre internally lit masterpiece represents 2000km of the Sun’s fiery expanse. Visitors will be captivated by the intricate beauty of sunspots\, spicules\, and filaments\, including the solar activity that produced the UK’s mesmerising Northern Lights in May 2024. The imagery for the artwork has been compiled using photographs of the Sun provided by Astrophotographer Dr Stuart Green (taken between May 2018 to June 2024) and NASA observations of the Sun\, with guidance from solar scientist\, Professor Lucie Green of University College London (UCL). \nThe installation is a fusion of solar imagery\, sunlight and a specially created surround sound composition by acclaimed artists Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson. Together\, the soundscape and sculpture take audiences on a sensory journey\, igniting curiosity and awe about both the closest star to Earth. \nFind out more \nIMPORTANT ACCESS INFORMATION\nPlease note that the main lift to access the Painted Hall is currently out of order due to a technical fault. There are 7 steps to access the King William Undercroft\, 20 steps to access the Lower Vestibule of the Painted Hall\, 16 steps to access the Main Vestibule the Painted Hall and a further 7 steps to access the Upper Hall. You will be able to take a pair after you enter the planetarium.\nFewer tickets are available so there is more space to spread out from other visitors.\nThe show runs at the beginning of the day\, so fewer visitors will be around the site in general.\n\n  \nTo help you prepare for your Morning Stars show\, we have a visual guide to visiting the planetarium available to download. \n\n\n\nDownload Morning Stars Visual Story – Jun 2024.pdf\npdf\, 2.58 MB\n\n\n\n  \nFree entry to the Royal Observatory Site is included with this show. Please note that this site will also be open to general entry\, so may be overwhelming for some. \n  \nThere are different variations of this show\, to suit those with different levels of astronomy knowledge: \n\n\n\nVariation\nUpcoming Dates\n\n\n\n\nBeginners\n 17 February\, 7 April\, 30 May\, 2 August\n\n\nAdvanced\n22 February\, 11 April\, 26 May\, 16 August\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeginners show\n10.15-11.00am | Royal Observatory Greenwich \nThis version of the show is more suitable for younger children or anyone who has very little knowledge of astronomy. \nIt will feature: \n\nThe night sky in general\nConstellations\nThe Moon\nMars\nSaturn\nDeep space images\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdvanced show\n10.15-11.00am | Royal Observatory Greenwich \nThis version of the show is more suitable for older children\, adults or anyone who would benefit from a more in-depth look into the subject. \nIt will feature: \n\nThe night sky in general\nConstellations\nStar formation\nHow stars end\nThe Moon\nThe planets with a close look at at least one\nGalaxies (if time allows)\n\nUnder-5s will not be admitted – the beginners show is suitable for younger children. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to book\n\n\nPlanetarium shows are available to book online and by phone.
