SUMMARY:Relaxed Evening Event Hiroshige - artist of the open road @ British Museum\, London
DESCRIPTION:This event welcomes people with disabilities\, neurodivergent individuals and anyone with sensory needs seeking a calmer environment in which to visit the Hiroshige: artist of the open road exhibition.\nThe first exhibition on Hiroshige to be held at the British Museum\, and the first on the artist in London for more than a quarter of a century\, this is a visually stunning portrait of a country about to change forever. \nFrom fashionable figures and energetic city views to remote landscapes and impressions of the natural world\, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) captured many aspects of life in the Japan of his time. Stunning bird-and-flower prints reveal his poetic feeling for nature while his evocative landscapes reflected the growing interest in travel across Japan. Hiroshige portrayed his world sometimes as it was\, but often the way he imagined it could be. \nThe exhibition features prints\, drawings\, illustrated books and paintings from the British Museum collection\, as well as a significant gift and loan of prints from Alan Medaugh\, a major US collector of Hiroshige’s work\, and other important loans. As well as exploring Hiroshige’s incredible body of work\, this show considers his global legacy\, which spans from Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868) through to Vincent van Gogh and contemporary artists such as Julian Opie. \nThis event is part of the public programme supporting Hiroshige: artist of the open road (1 May – 7 September 2025). \nBooking information\n\nBook now(Opens in new window) to reserve your place.\nPlease meet at the Montague Place entrance at 6.30pm. Visitors have access to a wide range of galleries and activities\, supported by and led by experienced\, neurodivergent-aware facilitators. \nThis event is best for children aged five to 15\, and siblings are welcome. \nTickets\nIt’s essential that all visitors book a free ticket online in advance. DESCRIPTION:Early Birds is a sensory friendly event for families with members who need a quieter environment to enjoy the museum. \n\nNext Early Birds: Saturday 26 July 2025\n\nEarly Birds visitors will also have an opportunity to book tickets to lower capacity sessions in Wonderlab at a reduced rate. \n\nFuture dates\nSign up to our Accessible newsletter to be the first to hear when new dates are announced and tickets are available. \nMore about Early Birds\nThis event is suitable for those who benefit from visiting the museum free from the hustle and bustle of the general public (for example\, individuals with autism spectrum conditions or sensory processing differences). \nTaking place on selected Saturdays and Sundays across the year\, we open the museum exclusively before or after hours\, and wherever possible will have adjusted operations and/or lowered volume levels on exhibits. \nAs well as exploring some of the galleries\, you can enjoy a selection of fun workshops in a gallery space. There will also be quiet areas for those needing to take a break.
