SUMMARY:Sensory Friendly Workshop @ V&A South Kensington\, London
DESCRIPTION:Come along to our Sensory Friendly monthly workshop for neurodiverse visitors of all ages and their families.  \nAs a family you’ll get to design\, make\, experiment and draw using lightboxes\, overhead projectors and a range of materials. Play with light and dark\, reflections\, shadows\, and colours.  \nIf you need a break\, there will be a breakout space available through the day\, with one within the event space and the other nearby. This space will have: a blackout tent\, cushions\, sensory toys\, and ear defenders. \nAll activities are optional\, and you can visit at any point during the event timings\, between 11am – 4pm. However\, please book your tickets to give us an idea if you’re likely to visit us earlier 11am-1:30pm\, or later in the day 1:30-4pm. \nThese sessions are created and led by Groundswell Arts. \nThis is an activity for families where either a child or the parent/ carer/ guardian has a neurodiversity or sensory processing disorder. This is a free\, drop-in event for families to enjoy all together; no child can be left unattended. Suitable for ages 5+. \nAll materials will be provided\, all sourced sustainably. No previous creative experience is necessary. \nSiblings\, family members\, and carers\, of all ages are all welcome (please book a space for each child attending).  \nThe Museum is accessible and step-free. DESCRIPTION:A relaxed morning event for Neurodivergent\, Learning Disabled children and their families/friends\nSkip the event ticket details and go to event summary. \n When\nSunday 28 September 2025 \n09:00 – 11:00\n Booking information\nTicketing for this event is £1.00 per person.  \nIf you wish to remain in the Tower of London after 11:00\, you may do so. \nSeparate ticket (advance booking required) \nBuy relaxed event tickets\nEvents\nFamilies\nStart of the events summary\nRelaxed events at the Tower of London are for Neurodivergent and Learning Disabled children & their families (5-16). \nWe welcome all families who identify as Neurodivergent or Learning Disabled including ADHD\, Autism\, Anxiety\, OCD\, Tourette’s and all other sensory and processing difficulties. \nEnjoy two hours at the Tower of London free from crowds between the hours of 9:00-11:00. \nThe event will include free entry to The Tower of London\, the Crown Jewels and access to relaxed and SEN programming lead by disability aware contractors and facilitators. \nCrowd levels are limited\, and access considerations have been made to ensure you and your family can enjoy the Tower\, free from loud sound effects and harsh lighting. \nA café and retail space will also be available. \nEvent information\nCrowd levels will be kept to a minimum for these events with only ticket holders being permitted entry during the event time slots. Ticketing is capped at 1500 people. \nLighting\, sound and general effects throughout the Tower grounds will be minimised or turned off for your comfort.  \nContent warnings will be placed upon spaces that may contain material audiences may find distressing.  \nAccess guides to the Tower of London are on our accessibility page. We will not ask for proof of disability or supporting documents. \nVisitors with limited mobility\nThe Tower of London is a historic building with difficult stairs and passageways – including spiral staircases – and wheelchair access is limited. There are many steps throughout the Tower with cobbles laid in some of the surfaces and pathways. There is a moving walkway (‘travelator’) alongside the Crown Jewels. Our Palace Hosts will be happy to stop the travelator. \nMobility aids\nA wheelchair is available free of charge. These cannot be pre-booked and are issued on a first-come first-served basis. It can be obtained by speaking to a member of staff on entry. \nLifts and ramps\nThere is a lift in the White Tower\, which will take you to and from the shop in the basement. This is on the north side of the White Tower\, opposite the entrance to the Crown Jewels. For safety reasons\, we can only permit one wheelchair user in the basement at a time. Please ask a member of staff in the area for assistance. \nThere is a platform lift at the end of the moving walkway in the Crown Jewels exhibition\, which allows you to access the raised platform to spend more time viewing the Crown Jewels. It is not suitable for mobility scooters. Please ask a member of the Jewel House team to use the lift.

Please note the Natural History Gallery is currently closed for redevelopment and won’t be reopening until late 2026. The Museum will open to the general public at 10am but Robot Zoo and the Aquarium will remain exclusively reserved for Relaxed Opening families until 11am. \nPlease note that the Aquarium will open exclusively for the Relaxed Opening at 10am. \nThe Café will also be open from 9am. \nInteractives in some of the main galleries will be turned off or down until 11am.  Hand dryers in all of the toilets inside the Museum will also be turned off until 11am and paper towels will be available instead. \nWhich spaces will be open?\nThis is a special opening for The Robot Zoo exhibition located on the Lower Ground Floor. We will also be opening some of our main galleries\, details of which to be confirmed shortly. \nThe Gardens are open from 7.15am daily and are a nice place to relax in good weather. There is also a toilet block in the garden which is open until the Gardens close at 8.30pm. \nThe Museum and Café are open to everyone during the day until 5pm. \nA Chill Out space in our Education Centre will be open during the event. DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to come and explore the museum at our relaxed morning. This special event is for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and or Neurodivergence and their families.  \nThis is a self-guided session but there will be sensory activities\, symbol trails and fidget toys you can borrow if you like and our friendly staff will be available to help.  \nThis is the first time we have offered a relaxed opening and we’d love your feedback on the day as we plan to have more accessible activities. \nWhat to expect \nFewer visitors than usual (maximum 25\, instead of 80)\, so the Museum will be quieter than usual\, with minimal queuing outside\nLighting will be adjusted for a calm experience\nNoise will be adjusted where possible\, with hand driers in the toilets switched off and hand towels available instead\nA selection of tactile materials related to the Museum will be available to touch\nA chill out space will be available – just ask one of our friendly staff\nVisual story and a SEND family trail will be made available shortly\nVisiting & access information \nWe are in a Grade I listed\, 19th-century building\, so access to the Museum isn’t always straightforward. When planning your visit\, it might be useful to know the following: \nPlease get in touch before your visit and we’ll do everything we can to make sure you have a positive experience. Rhiannon\, our Public Programmes & Young People Manager\, will be in touch with everyone who books in advance of the session to learn about their access needs\nDue to the historic nature of the space\, we are only able to accommodate one wheelchair user per Relaxed Opening slot\nEverything in the Museum is on open display\, and we ask visitors not to touch anything\nThere is historic furniture throughout the Museum – please don’t sit on the chairs. Please ask our friendly staff if you need to sit down\nThe Museum has some uneven flooring\, with grilles in some places\, through which you can see the floor below\nThe walls are covered with objects\, some of which are extremely fragile\nSome areas are dark and narrow\nPlease note that the Museum will open to the public at 10am\, when we will remove the sensory baskets. Please feel free to continue your visit\, being aware that the Museum can get very busy and some spaces can feel a bit cramped\nTickets are free\, with limited spaces available\, and pre-booking is required. One ticket per person\, and one member of the group needs to be aged 5-25 with autism spectrum conditions or sensory processing differences. Drop-in workshops are most suitable for ages 8-14. The event is suitable for individuals or families with members who may have sensory processing differences\, autistic spectrum conditions or would otherwise benefit from a quieter environment to explore IWM London.  \nAs part of our late opening\, you will be able to explore all our current exhibitions and have the opportunity to participate in family-friendly activities.  \nThere will also be quiet rooms for those needing to take a break\, a breakout space\, and an indoor eating area for anyone wishing to bring their own food.  \nTo help ensure a smooth entry to the museum\, we kindly ask visitors to book a free ticket online in advance. However\, we will still have capacity available onsite for those who are unable to book tickets. \nWe will send all visitors an email around a week before the event with more information and a visual walkthrough to help you fully plan for your visit. Details of where these areas are located can be found in the visual walkthrough. There will be signage at the event.\nThe exhibitions are designed to encourage visitors to consider the experiences of people during conflict. In our First World War Galleries\, there is a short\, optional section that takes visitors through a replica trench. The floor in this area is textured\, with low lighting and sound effects.
